My name is Charles Williams. I am interested in studying political science for my PhD degree. Growing up, I had much interest in watching the news. There are many times when I would be engaged in actively thinking about laws and how decisions are made at various levels of the government. With time, I have developed a greater passion for issues related to authority, laws, order and international relations. I feel that my country needs more people who are passionate about real issues in the country which affect its development. I believe that being a political scientist will give me an opportunity to serve in the political sphere, which I believe is the most influential component in the structures of all nations. I will use the expertise gained in my training to help people understand political ideologies, structures and their impact on different aspects of the society. While in my line of duty, I will study various political trends and give insights about different decisions and events.
Working in the public space requires an individual to establish close and meaningful relationships with others both for short-term and long-term. This implies that political scientists should possess good communication skills to enable them to link with others effectively. They should be confident in their speeches and conversations at all times. During my Master degree program, I was a bit shy, especially in delivering presentations and public speaking. Once I identified this shortcoming, I talked with my supervisor, who advised me to take a communication course, Art of Presentation: Advanced Oral Communication Course. This course has been very impactful on my communication skills. I have grown to become a confident speaker, and I no longer feel shy to speak even when in huge crowds. I have learnt speaking skills to make my presentations and speeches more effective. For instance, I am able to use body language appropriately to make my presentations more engaging and appealing. I have learnt to always maintain an eye-contact with my audience to maintain their attention. Apart from what I learnt in the communication skills, I have a special interest in research. I like researching on both present and past events and using this to forecast what might happen in the future. I feel confident about my research skills, particularly because I have done much practice in my previous learning experiences.Being in a graduate school implies that I have already cultivated some skills which will help me complete my degree successfully. Some of the skills that I believe will help me a lot include decision-making, communication, technology and collaborative skills. I believe that analytical decision-making is key in a graduate school, especially in the research component. Effective communication skills will be very helpful, especially when collaborating with other people both at school and outside. I have had much experience in working with larger teams, and I believe this will be an edge for me in managing conflicts. Working with large groups has enabled me to develop practical problem-solving skills which will be crucial at graduate school. I have advanced knowledge of various computers programs and applications which I believe will help me with my projects at the graduate school. Education technology has been rapidly evolving in the modern context. Thus, technology skills make learning more fun and easier. All these skills and qualities will cumulatively make learning at the graduate school more manageable.
I have successfully completed both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs. Between 2015 and 2016, I volunteered at the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM). The association is majorly concerned with education and its link with the achievement of national goals and development. While there, I gained much knowledge about the links between education and culture.
